Standard Response to Off-topic Info Requests
I created "Walnut on the Web!" in 1994 and have been personally maintaining it ever since, and I'm sorry to say, the day has finally arrived that I've been desperately trying to avoid. Because of the plethora of requests for "black walnut recipes," "how to husk the black walnuts from the tree in my back yard," "how to plant the nuts from my tree in the back yard," "how to get the stain off my hands," "where to sell the tree in my back yard," etc., etc., I'm going to have to change my policy regarding responding to email requests for information.
Up until this time, I've tried to answer every request for any information about black walnut that anyone has sent me--even if a request was made that had nothing at all to do with our products, namely, the Successor GST genetically superior black walnut trees and their seedlings. But I can't continue to do this and keep my sanity. From now on, any request for off-topic information will not be answered. Instead, one can read my past, typical response(s) here.
Please understand that "Walnut on the Web!" is really here for one, and only one, reason: the benefit of my current and future customers. In other words, I am not a public library nor a county extension agent. I have provided extensive links to general topics about black walnut that should be sufficient to educate even the totally uninitiated. If you can't find what you're looking for there--and you don't want information on our products--please, I beg of you, spare us both a lot of lost time and effort by refraining from emailing me.
I hope you don't think these measures are too severe. I really must concentrate on providing information to people who really are interested in our products, and to that end, I'll be happy to send you a printed Complete Information Packet ("Info Packet").
The cost is only $10 (Plus S & H).
Sincerely,

Dear [Party Interested in Info about Black Walnut Nuts, Recipes, etc.],
Although we don't deal with common black walnut nuts (NOTE - AFT does buy back nuts from their grafted trees.), I have provided several links on "Walnut on the Web!!" for people interested in such:
Recently I did a quick search on Infoseek (http://www.infoseek.com) and found the following links, the second of which describes well a variation on the time-honored "automobile tire/gravel driveway" method of husking black walnuts:
Now back to the real reason for my web site, "Walnut on the Web!:"
Thank you for your interest in our products. I'll be happy to send you a Complete Info Packet on the Successor GST genetically superior black walnut trees..
The information packet contains some very detailed articles on choosing an appropriate site for one's black walnut plantation. Most of the general information, including prices and a printable order form, is duplicated on "Walnut on the Web!:"
Hope this helps--and I hope you decide to plant some of the Successor GST genetically superior black walnut; they really are quite impressive trees!
Best regards,

P.S. The American Black Walnut Association's (ABWA) newsletter, Black Walnut Tree Topics (BWTT) usually contains a black walnut recipe in each quarterly issue. You can print out an application for membership in the ABWA at:

Stain Requests
Dear [Party Interested in Info about Black Walnut Stain, Juglone, etc.],
Don't feel bad, you've happened upon one of the many reasons I always try to make it clear to people that I "sell genetically superior black walnut trees for people to plant as an investment for veneer-grade timber--WE DO NOT MESS WITH THE NUTS." (No pun intended.)
Juglone, the allelopathic compound in all black walnut (Juglans nigra) tissues that inhibits the growth of many competing plants, is also a very prolific stain--as virtually any youngster who grew up with a black walnut tree in the back yard can attest to. The juice from walnut husks was used extensively by Native Americans as a dye, and as you have obviously discovered, virtually no solvent removes it from skin. (The only "solvent" that will help is a good dose of time--it just has to wear off.) Here's some more info about juglone:

Tree Requests
Dear [Party Interested in Info about Selling the Black Walnut Tree in the Back Yard, etc.],
It is a common misconception that I (Neidigh Hybrid Walnut--or American Forestry Technology, for that matter) buy and sell mature black walnut trees. We do not buy mature black walnut trees nor do we offer consultation services for those selling trees, however, your question is asked so often I have included several pages and links on "Walnut on the Web!" that you may find helpful:
All that said, I might add that because of the unknown genetics of your trees it is virtually impossible to tell their age without drilling a core sample (which would severely damage any potential veneer timber value in the tree) or cutting the tree down and counting the rings. However, a competent, local consulting forester should be able to assess their value by inspecting them in person. Again, please refer to the above links to this end.
